The Alachua County Democratic Party’s Outstanding Democrats Luncheon was a resounding success! The following people won awards. Harry Truman “The Buck Stops Here” Award (to a male elected official): Von Fraser, Alachua Co. Tax Collector. Eleanor Roosevelt Award (to a female elected official): Representative Debbie Boyd. Democrat of the Year Award: Staci Fox. Award for Sustained Service to the Democratic Party: David Chalmers. Unsung Hero Awards: Mae Leone, Stewart Neilson, Elizabeth Powers, Kathleen Shiverick, Bill Wrighton and Evelyn Foxx. Congratulations!

On February 21st local Democrats Krysten Rosen (UF College Dems), Susan Bottcher, Evelyn Foxx, Jon Reiskind, and Zach Moller (UF College Dems) met with Senator Bill Nelson in Gainesville. Jon Reiskind receives Golden GavelThe Florida Democratic Party awarded a biennial Golden Gavel award for excellence to the Alachua County Democratic Party. One of twelve counties in Florida recognized for outstanding accomplishments over the past year, our local party was saluted by State Party Chair Karen Thurman for “building an organization that can readily contribute to the support of Democratic candidates and initiatives.” Alachua County Democratic Party Chair Jon Reiskind received the award during the 2007 State Convention in Walt Disney World on October 27. LizzieJenkinsThe Democratic Black Caucus of Florida (DBCF) elected Lizzie Jenkins, founder of the Alachua County DCBF chapter, as its statewide President last weekend in Orlando. In addition to being a retired educator who spent 33 years teaching in Alachua County public schools, Lizzie is a noted author who has written extensively about the 1923 massacre at Rosewood, Florida. Congratulations, Lizzie!
