The Alachua Democratic Party had its 2011 Outstanding Democrats Award Luncheon on April 18th, at the Paramount Plaza Hotel! Congratulations to Terri Fleming who received our 2010 Democrat of the Year Award! The Eleanor Roosevelt Award went to former County Commissioner Cynthia Moore Chestnut, and Gainesville City Commissioner Thomas Hawkins, Jr., received the Harry S. Truman “The Buck Stops Here” Award. The Young Democrats awarded their Jeffrey Mattison Wershow Award to Eric M. Conrad . “Unsung Hero” Awards were received by Don Herget, Mae Leone, and Susan Mickelberry, Michelle Ott, and Jocelyn Peskin. Special Achievement Awards were presented to former State Party Chair Karen Thurman, Representative Charles “Chuck” Chestnut IV, Gainesville City Commissioner Lauren Poe and former State Representative Debbie Boyd.

Congratulations to Susan Bottcher (District 3) and her campaign team on her win in the City Commission election Tuesday!  We know she will be an excellent voice and vote in her new role! And our thanks to Lauren Poe (District 2) for serving for the last three years as City Commissioner par excellence! We are grateful for his service and will miss his presence on the Commission! We hope he will run again!

KEY PROVISIONS that take effect immediately under Senate Bill as amended by Reconciliation Bill:
1. SMALL BUSINESS TAX CREDITS. Offers tax credits to small businesses to make employee coverage more affordable. Tax credits of up to 35 percent of premiums will be immediately available to firms that choose to offer coverage. Effective beginning for calendar year 2010. (Beginning in 2014, the small business tax credits will cover 50 percent of premiums.)
