10th Annual Lawton Chiles Gala September 25th

The Alachua County Democratic Party (ACDEC) invites you to the 10th Annual Lawton Chiles Gala! The Lawton Chiles Gala, named in memory of a true blue Democrat, Lawton Chiles, is the primary fundraiser each year for the Alachua County Democratic Party. Where and When: Thursday, September 25, at the University of Florida Reitz Union Ballroom. Registration and Silent Auction Begin at 5:30 p.m. Dinner Seating at 6:30 p.m. Program and Dinner at 7:00 p.m.

Your ticket will cover food and parking in the Reitz Union garage. Bring cash and checkbooks to cover bar, Blue Boutique and Silent Auction purchases. All Profits will fund our efforts in 2008 to get Democrats elected. We are counting on you to help!

The next meeting of the Alachua County Democratic Party will be Wednesday, September 10 at 7:00 pm in the County Administration Building (SE 1st St. and University Ave.). All Democrats are encouraged to attend! Some of us will gather before the meeting (around 5:30 pm) at Emilano’s Cafe (7 SE 1st Ave.) for supper and to socialize. Please join us!

The ACDEC Hospitality Committee needs your help! Senator Obama’s campaign has dispatched an unprecedented number of volunteers to Florida to turn out the voters on November 4th! Most are unpaid. We have worked at housing the volunteers and are preparing two meals a day, breakfast (9 am) and supper (7 pm) at Obama headquarters at 901 NW 8th Ave. Please help! Activist Trainings September 20th and 23rd

The Alachua County Democratic Party will offer free activist training at the Democratic Party Center (901 NW 8th Ave., Suite A-3, Gainesville) on Saturday, September 20 at 10 am (”Intro to the Democratic Party”) and 11 am (”Canvassing: Keys to Success”), and again on Tuesday, September 23 at 6 pm and 7 pm. Congratulations to Barack Obama for making history last night! Now it’s time to get out the vote and elect Obama/Biden on November 4! We are so proud of our Alachua County convention delegates (Susan Bottcher, Richard A. Perry, Staci Fox, Jimmy E. The Alachua County Democratic Party’s Outstanding Democrats Luncheon was a resounding success! The following people won awards. Harry Truman “The Buck Stops Here” Award (to a male elected official): Von Fraser, Alachua Co. Tax Collector. Eleanor Roosevelt Award (to a female elected official): Representative Debbie Boyd. Democrat of the Year Award: Staci Fox. Award for Sustained Service to the Democratic Party: David Chalmers. Unsung Hero Awards: Mae Leone, Stewart Neilson, Elizabeth Powers, Kathleen Shiverick, Bill Wrighton and Evelyn Foxx. Congratulations!

Local Democrats Meet w/Senator Bill Nelson

On February 21st local Democrats Krysten Rosen (UF College Dems), Susan Bottcher, Evelyn Foxx, Jon Reiskind, and Zach Moller (UF College Dems) met with Senator Bill Nelson in Gainesville. Senator Nelson invited a few dozen local Democratics and community leaders to discuss politics and have lunch at SFCC. Senator Nelson’s message was clear: for Democrats to win the White House in November, the Democratic nominee for president must win Florida.

“The Alachua County Democratic Party is delighted to hear Senator Nelson articulate what we’ve known for some time,” said Jon Reiskind, Alachua County Democratic Party chairman.

Senator Nelson shared more good news. “More than 60% of registered Independents are leaning toward the Democratic Party.”

“We have our work cut out for us for the rest of 2008” said Reiskind. “We know who these voters are and how to reach them. Our task now is to train more volunteers and raise the funds necessary to execute our strategic plan.”

Alachua County Democrats honored by State Party!

The Florida Democratic Party awarded a biennial Golden Gavel award for excellence to the Alachua County Democratic Party. One of twelve counties in Florida recognized for outstanding accomplishments over the past year, our local party was saluted by State Party Chair Karen Thurman for “building an organization that can readily contribute to the support of Democratic candidates and initiatives.” Alachua County Democratic Party Chair Jon Reiskind received the award during the 2007 State Convention in Walt Disney World on October 27. Alachua County’s Lizzie Jenkins elected Black Caucus President!

The Democratic Black Caucus of Florida (DBCF) elected Lizzie Jenkins, founder of the Alachua County DCBF chapter, as its statewide President last weekend in Orlando. In addition to being a retired educator who spent 33 years teaching in Alachua County public schools, Lizzie is a noted author who has written extensively about the 1923 massacre at Rosewood, Florida. Congratulations, Lizzie!
