All Democrats are encouraged to attend! Some of us will gather before the meeting (around 5:30 pm) at Emilano’s Cafe (7 SE 1st Ave.) for supper and to socialize. Please join us!

In the past, reform has failed when its opponents were able to confuse and scare the public with distortions, exaggerations, and outright lies. ACDEC Supports the Community Choice Act!

On August 19th, Fred Pratt, VP of the Alachua County Democrats with Disabilities Caucus, and several other ACDEC members met in Gainesville with Celeste Brown, Regional Director to US Senator Bill Nelson (D, FL) to encourage his sponsorship of the Community Choice Act of 2009 (HR 1670/SB 683). Ms. Brown was very positive in her response and is passing along our requests to Senator Nelson. The Community Choice Act will allow the allocation of Medicaid funds for long-term, home-based care.

State Legislation Against Free Choice Act Defeated!

Congratulations to the ACDEC Legislative Committee recent initiative to develop a resolution against a state law to end-run the Free Choice Act poised for presidential signature as a federal law. Our elected officials at the state level recently voted against the proposed state law! Thanks also to our Communications Committee for developing a press release April 20 to send out with the resolution. All Florida lawmakers and our U.S. senators received the resolution, as well as members of the U.S. House and the media are next. Great work!

After debate in the Legislative Committee of the Alachua County Democratic Executive Committee, a resolution was advanced to the April general membership meeting of the Alachua County Democratic Executive Committee to call attention to the fact that the Florida Legislature was attempting to pass state legislation in direct conflict with pending Federal legislation known as the Employee Free Choice Act. The resolution passed, and the ACDEC has taken on the urgent task of informing all state and national legislators representing the state of Florida and also providing this information to media outlets in the state and nationally. On April 16th Gov. Howard Dean gave a rousing and insightful talk at UF, and Friday we had a lively Blue Door Café. On Saturday, April 18th, jon Reiskind, Susan Bottcher, and Lizzie Jenkins attended a Clay County DEC fundraiser in Orange Park where Karen Thurman was the guest of honor.

The Alachua County Democratic Party’s Outstanding Democrats Luncheon was a resounding success! The following people won awards. Harry Truman “The Buck Stops Here” Award (to a male elected official): Von Fraser, Alachua Co. Tax Collector. Eleanor Roosevelt Award (to a female elected official): Representative Debbie Boyd. Democrat of the Year Award: Staci Fox. Award for Sustained Service to the Democratic Party: David Chalmers. Unsung Hero Awards: Mae Leone, Stewart Neilson, Elizabeth Powers, Kathleen Shiverick, Bill Wrighton and Evelyn Foxx. Congratulations!
